So now its 600 DVDs/second
on a single strand of optical fibre. Video-on-demand, which seemed like sci-fi only 10 years ago (in Bill Gate's book
), looks trivially possible. Clearly, we're not likely to hit an upper limit on our video-conferencing/VoIP capabilities in terms of bandwidth.
What we need to work on now is reducing the delays which affect interactive applications. If we can ensure that these delays remain low even as more and more data is pumped into the networks, we'll truly become a "connected" world!
