CIA, MI6 and RAW

In continuation to Sabarish's post on the bad design of ISRO's website, I have more to say. Atleast ISRO has a website. India's intelligence agency (that's RAW, if you didn't know. I'm sure you know its the CIA for the US and perhaps even that its the MI6/SIS for the UK) does not even seem to have one. Perhaps it is so secret they thought it unwise to put one up. Unfortunately, we know more about American intelligence and other agencies than we know about their Indian counterparts. I know how much effort I have expended in trying to find out more about the RAW. Can we atleast get a glimpse of what kind of intelligence capabilities we have as a nation? Perhaps even what we had 10 years ago?

Even as Hollywood churns out movie after movie about American intelligence and covert operations, Bollywood is stuck up with creating movies showcasing poor shayari and love-struck 18-year-olds. It is time we recognize that no generation works for their country out of sheer patriotism, atleast not in the absence of propoganda. It is time we realise that the aspirations of children in this country atleast are driven very largely by what they see on television and the silver screen. The absence of any solid effort to showcase such agencies (RAW/DRDO/ISRO) by the government, these agencies or the media suggest either of two reasons. One, the agencies are well-staffed with very high-calibre people and they need no more talented people; that they are churning out over-the-horizon technology and it would be imprudent to make such technology public; that they are so good at recruiting under-cover agents that we don't even realise how much work is being done. This is hard to believe. The other is that they have nothing to showcase and are too proud to indulge in marketing. I fervently hope it is the former; or that they shed this false pride soon and do some serious rethinking about their public image.

  • If you want some info on RAW, have a look at its wikipedia article.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_and_Analysis_Wing

Talks a lot abt its activities.

  • Precisely my point. We need a wikipedia entry, and that too a very speculative one, to tell us about our intelligence "wing". Sad.

  • on other side, we can say, how secretly these organisations (i am talking about RAW) work that even indian dont know about them :D

  • Agencies like RAW doesn't need any kind of publicity or "CIA-gimmicks". These organizations don't put ads(generally, though I came accross one such ad. by Mossad once) for recruitment. They put advertisment in name of some obscure firm recruting say, medical representatives. They call them and interview them in some hotel and when the candidate seems genuine and able, he is recruited. Offices of RAW (apart from N. Delhi one) don't have any sign board. They do a lot of exciting stuff. Stuff like listening all the telephone calls going outside from pakistan, keeping baluchistan burning!, internal intelligence. I am not very sure abt this but I think they also read(atleast they can) all the emails, messenger messages and other data flowing in and out on the country's internet. And believe me they are highly professionals. And no this all is not a figment of my imagination(though I am not very sure abt the last bit).

  • Dear anonymous: that's roughly what I'm complaining about. I know about some of the recruitment activity too. Point is - tell us something to be proud of; something to be pumped about. I desperately want to be. I'm sure RAW is perfectly capable of doing great things. But the vacuum of not knowing is painful. Even a conspiracy theory about a political assassination somewhere.

  • RAW is one of its kind... CIA is the Agency but not RAW. RAW is the Wings that flies so high that it is totally undetectable apart form all kind of conspiracy theories. RAW was behind a lot of accomplishments were only for the India. That is why it is so secretive that the name of RAW is hardly heard around the news or global apart from CIA or ISI or KGB or MIs etc etc... RAW only serves its Nation its constitutions, its government and its people to which it serves its best. RAW belongs to Indian Army which obeys the orders of the Indian Government.
